Politicians do the darnedest things. From challenging elementary school students on the correct spelling of potato (Dan Quayle – potatoe) to inviting the media to go ahead and just try to prove infidelity (Gary Hart – cheating on his wife during his 1988 campaign), presidential nominees make strange campaign blunders all the time.

In theory, every voting night loss to another nominee is an unsuccessful campaign. Opposing presidential nominees will do anything to help another presidential nominee lose their campaign.  However, there are a special few who managed to lose the Presidency all by themselves.

6. Aaron Burr – 1800
Aaron Burr ran against Thomas Jefferson. When voting ended with a tie, Alexander Hamilton picked Thomas Jefferson as the winner. Aaron Burr was furious. Why should Jefferson win? After all, the Declaration of Independence really wasn’t that important. He then and challenged Hamilton to a duel that resulted in Hamilton’s death.

5. Henry Clay – 1824, 1832, 1944
Henry Clay just could not win. Perhaps he was too young, too inexperienced, or too desperate. After more than 20 years of unsuccessfully attempting to run for President, Henry Clay resigned himself to being the best Speaker of the House in history.

4. Horace Greeley – 1872
Horace Greeley was determined to have all Union forces withdrawn from the South. His campaign was met with enthusiasm by so many that the Liberal Republicans and the Democrats nominated Greeley for presidency. The Union won and Greely, losing by a landslide, died just a few days later.

3. Henry Wallace – 1948
1948 was an exciting year for terrible Presidential candidates. President Roosevelt’s former Vice President, Henry Wallace ran for the presidency on a pro-communism platform. In the post-war anti-communism atmosphere of the United States, Henry Wallace was unable to secure even one vote.

2. Strom Thurmond – 1948
In the same year that Henry Wallace failed miserably, Strom Thurmond managed to secure a few votes. However, his Segregation Forever platform was not met with much enthusiasm. Only a few southern states offered any support for Strom Thurmond’s campaign.

1. Ross Perot – 1992
Looking back, many are relieved Ross Perot lost the election. At one point, Perot was leagues ahead of both Bush Sr and Clinton. However, Perot kept closing and reopening his campaign, losing more voters each time. His indecision in combination with his “Crazy” theme song lost the election.
